The Slot Grill is made from heavy 10-gauge carbon steel. This is thick, durable steel — not thin sheet metal. For reference, 10-gauge steel is roughly the thickness of two U.S. quarters stacked together.
Most big box store grills are made from thin sheet metal, use lower-grade materials, and prioritize low cost over performance and durability. They don’t retain heat well, don’t cook consistently, and don’t hold up to the heat and conditions involved in real grilling. The Slot Grill is built from thick steel, uses a simple and proven design, and is made to last — not to be disposable.
Assembled, the cooking surface measures 20 inches wide by 11 inches deep, providing a full-size cooking area. Disassembled, it packs flat to approximately 1 inch thick for easy transport and storage.
The Slot Grill weighs approximately 28 pounds. The weight comes from the thickness of the steel and is intentional for durability and stability.
The Slot Grill is designed to be assembled and disassembled in 30–60 seconds with no tools. It is shipped to you in the flat-pack configuration, making it easy to transport, store, and set up wherever you’re cooking.
Once you’ve done it once, about 30–60 seconds.
Yes. You can cook with charcoal or cooking wood. Most people use charcoal, but oak, mesquite, pecan, and fruit woods all work well for cooking.
The Slot Grill is designed for high-heat cooking. Metal naturally expands and contracts with temperature changes, so minor movement or flexing during use can occur. This is normal and expected with any metal grill. The Slot Grill will not permanently warp or hold an out-of-design shape under normal use for which it is designed.
The Slot Grill assembles into an extremely stable, slotted-in structure. When used as intended, the parts remain secure during cooking and normal use. Accidental bumps won’t cause it to come apart, though like any grill, it can disassemble if deliberately knocked over or pushed off a surface.
Yes. The Slot Grill is more than strong enough to handle appropriately sized cast iron cookware, including pots and pans used for outdoor cooking.
The Slot Grill should be used on non-combustible surfaces such as dirt, gravel, sand, or fire-safe pads. It also stands taller than many grills of a similar design, making it popular for tailgating. Many examples of cooking on truck beds, picnic tables, and similar surfaces can be seen in videos without issues. That said, using the grill on any elevated or non-fire-rated surface is done at your own risk, and care should always be taken to avoid heat damage.
If you want to clean it up for storage, treat it like you would dirty dishes. Wash each piece with dish soap and a steel or copper wire scrub pad, then rinse with water using a sink, hose, or even a water bottle. Towel dry and store in a dry location. If possible, apply a very thin coat of food-safe oil using a paper towel, similar to cast iron. This helps protect the steel during storage.
Like any raw carbon steel cooking surface, it will naturally darken with use. Basic cleaning and keeping it dry is usually all that’s needed.
It’s carbon steel, so yes — it can rust if left wet or unprotected, just like cast iron.
Normal use, drying after cleaning, and light oiling prevent issues.
Yes. At 20 inches wide, the Slot Grill is large enough to hold several pieces of firewood and can be used as a small fire pit. Shorter pieces of wood work best, as they allow for better airflow.
Some people choose to stand on their assembled grill to demonstrate its durability. Yes — it can support the weight of a full-grown adult, and we’ve had two grown men standing on one with no indication that the structure was nearing its limit.
That said, the Slot Grill is not designed to be stood on, and we do not recommend or suggest performing this test. Standing on the grill is not an intended use.
Yes — as long as you follow local fire regulations and place it on a safe surface.
