What's in the Box

  • Slot Grill body (Full Size in 10-gauge or Compact in 12-gauge carbon steel)
  • 2 grill grates
  • 2 grill grate keys (they double as bottle openers)
  • Griddle plates if you choose a griddle configuration

Which Size Should I Choose?

Choose the Full Size if you cook for a family or group, want room for cast iron and bigger cuts, or mostly travel by truck, UTV, RV or boat where a 27.6 lb flat pack is no problem.

Choose the Compact if you want the lightest heavy-duty option, cook for one to three people, or need to save space in a trunk, kayak, or camp box.

Add a griddle if you want breakfast, smash burgers, fajitas, or anything that needs a flat cooking surface. The griddle plates stack with the grill, so the whole setup still travels as one flat package.

Materials and Build

  • Thick carbon steel throughout. 10-gauge on the Full Size, 12-gauge on the Compact. No thin stamped sheet metal.
  • Interlocking slot design. The steel panels slot together by hand and hold each other in place. No tools required.
  • Elevated firebox with an air gap underneath. Improves airflow and reduces heat transfer to the surface below.
  • Formed press-brake bottom and ash catcher. Adds strength during use and locks the flat pack together for travel.
  • Two-piece top. Supports the modular plancha-style griddle system.
  • Stacks flat. The grill, grates and griddles pack into one flat bundle.

The design has been refined through real-world use since production began in early 2024. Every change had one goal: stronger, simpler, faster to set up, and easier to carry.

How to Set Up the Slot Grill

  1. Pick your spot. Use a stable, level, non-combustible surface such as bare soil, gravel, sand, concrete, or a fire-safe pad. Keep clear of structures, vehicles, tents, dry grass and anything that can burn.
  2. Start with one end piece. Hold it with the SLOT GRILL text facing out.
  3. Add the two-tab side panel. Insert the two tabs on one end of the side panel into the slots on the end piece.
  4. Add the second end piece. With its SLOT GRILL text facing out, insert the other two tabs of the side panel into it. The end pieces are universal, so either one works on either end as long as the text faces out.
  5. Lock in the V. Take the remaining side panel, the one with a single tab at each top end and three tabs along the bottom. Set its top tabs onto the top of each end piece, then slide its three bottom tabs into the bottom of the first side panel. The two sides interlock into a tight V.
  6. Check it. Make sure every tab is fully seated and the grill sits level.
  7. Add fuel and light it. Load charcoal or cooking wood into the firebox.
  8. Set the grates. Place the grill grates on top, or swap in a griddle plate, and you are ready to cook.

Most owners can set it up or take it down in about 30 to 60 seconds once they have done it a couple of times. Watch setup and cooking videos on the official @SlotGrill YouTube channel and @SlotGrill TikTok.

How to Pack It Flat

  1. Let the grill and ashes cool completely.
  2. Empty the ash.
  3. Lift off the grates or griddles. Slide the V side panel out, then pull the end pieces off the other side panel.
  4. Stack the flat pieces together with the grates and griddles for transport or storage.

Seasoning and Care

  • Season before first use. Raw carbon steel should be seasoned. Heat a very thin layer of food-safe oil onto clean steel. Over time it darkens into a protective cooking surface. See How to Season a Carbon Steel Grill.
  • Keep it dry. Carbon steel can surface-rust if stored wet. Dry every piece and wipe on a light coat of oil or Slot Grill Seasoning Balm.
  • Light rust is normal and fixable. Scrub it off and re-season. See How to Prevent Rust on Your Carbon Steel Grill.
  • Quick clean between cooks. If you leave it set up, just pull one side panel once the ash is cold, empty it, and slide the panel back in.
  • Do not paint the grill, including with high-heat paint. Seasoning is the finish.

Safety Guidelines

  • Outdoor use only. Never use a charcoal grill in a home, garage, vehicle, tent or any enclosed space.
  • Burning charcoal or wood produces carbon monoxide, which can cause serious injury or death.
  • Always use on a stable, level, non-combustible surface with clearance from anything that can burn.
  • The steel gets extremely hot. Use heat-safe gloves and tools.
  • Carbon steel expands as it heats. Some temporary movement is normal. Let it cool naturally.
  • Never leave a fire unattended, and follow campground rules, burn bans and local fire regulations.
  • Never burn treated or painted lumber, trash, or unknown materials.
  • Do not stand, climb, or jump on the grill.
